Looking to move a vehicle from Halifax to Vancouver? You don’t have to white-knuckle it across the entire country by yourself.
Ship your car with Reindeer Logistics and skip the whole ordeal.
We get it. You pulled up the map, traced that line from Nova Scotia all the way out to British Columbia, and it just kind of hits you. That’s close to 6,000 kilometres of highway. Multiple days behind the wheel, six provinces, and the weather can honestly change on you three times before lunch. Most people seriously underestimate what that drive actually feels like.
And the thing is, most people don’t realize how draining it actually is until they’re somewhere deep in northern Ontario, wondering why they didn’t just ship it. By that point, you’re already committed.
At Reindeer Logistics, we handle cross-country vehicle moves every single day. Whether you’re relocating to the West Coast for work, moving back home, or you need to transport a company fleet, we’ve got you covered. Here’s what you need to know.
Let's be honest here. Driving from Halifax to Vancouver sounds like it could be the adventure of a lifetime. In reality, that's almost a full week on the road if you're really pushing it. Hotels you didn't budget for, gas that keeps adding up, fast food you'll regret later, and thousands of kilometres of wear on your vehicle that you can't exactly take back.
Save yourself the time. Ship your vehicle, and it'll be waiting for you when you land in Vancouver. You fly out in the morning and your car shows up a few days later. Simple as that.
Your car stays in better shape, too, which is something people forget about. All those kilometres add up fast and we're talking serious wear and tear on your vehicle, not to mention the risk of something going wrong mechanically when you're stuck between Sudbury and Winnipeg with barely any cell service. Shipping keeps your car off the road entirely.
And the math often works out way better than most people think. When you factor in gas across six provinces, hotels for four or five nights, meals on the road, and time off work? Shipping starts looking pretty reasonable when you actually compare the two. Get a quote and see for yourself.
Here are some things worth considering.
Your timeline
Got a deadline for when you need the car in Vancouver? Bring that up right when you book. Giving us advance notice means the best chance of hitting your delivery window. We’ll be straight with you about realistic arrival expectations, not just tell you what sounds good.
Budget
First question everyone asks, which makes total sense. We offer free quotes so you can see what the actual cost is before making any decisions. No surprises, no hidden fees, nothing like that.
Weather and seasons
Here’s the deal. Canadian weather is unpredictable. And when you’re crossing the entire country, your vehicle could see rain in New Brunswick, snow in northern Ontario, and sunshine in Alberta all in the same trip. Winter moves take longer sometimes, that’s just the reality of it.
Insurance
Don’t skip over this one. You want confirmation that you’re covered if anything happens during transport. All carriers in our network carry proper insurance levels. Whatever company you end up going with, make sure you understand their policy before you sign anything.
Open vs. enclosed transport
Two ways to get your vehicle across the country. Both work; it just comes down to what you’re shipping and what matters most to you.
Open vehicle carriers
Standard method for moving a car in Canada. Your vehicle gets loaded onto a two-level trailer alongside other vehicles with no roof or sides, so everything stays visible during transit.
Because open trailers are more fuel-efficient, the cost tends to be lower. Plus, the driver can physically see your vehicle throughout the trip to make sure everything stays secure. Most regular cars, trucks and SUVs go this route.
The tradeoff is exposure to whatever the weather does along the way. Road debris, rain, that kind of thing. But the cost savings usually win out for most people.
Enclosed vehicle carriers
Got a classic car, a luxury vehicle, or something you really don’t want exposed to the elements? Enclosed is built for that. Your vehicle rides inside a fully covered trailer with solid walls and a roof, completely shielded from weather and road debris.
Costs more than open, yes. But for certain vehicles, that extra protection is absolutely worth every penny. That’s a call only you can make, though.
Halifax to Vancouver is one of the longest domestic routes in Canada, so the timeline reflects that. Weather, road conditions, and seasonal demand all play a role. Part of that you can plan around, part of it you really can’t, particularly in the winter months.
At booking, you’ll receive a transit window and your coordinator will keep you posted throughout with regular updates. No guessing involved.
On cost, it depends on the distance, your vehicle’s size and weight, exact pickup and delivery locations, and which transport method you choose. The easiest way to find out what you’re actually looking at is to request a quote. Takes under a minute and costs nothing.
Have you ever shipped a vehicle before? Here’s what to expect when you go with Reindeer.
Request your free quote
This is where it all starts. We need some basic info: your vehicle’s make, model, and year; its condition; pickup and drop-off postal codes; when you need it delivered; and any special considerations, like aftermarket modifications.
Sixty seconds, that’s all it takes.
Meet your relocation coordinator
After you book, we pair you with a dedicated coordinator. This is your single point of contact for the entire move from beginning to end. Scheduling, carrier coordination, questions, updates, they handle all of it. Zero phone trees and no getting bounced around between departments—one person who actually knows your shipment.
Get your car ready
There’s some prep you’ll need to handle before pickup day. On the day itself, you or someone you designate walks around the vehicle with the driver to document the exterior condition, and then both parties sign a bill of lading. From there, your vehicle is on its way to British Columbia.
Follow along during transit
Your coordinator sends updates as the vehicle moves across the country.
Receive your car in Vancouver
We deliver seven days a week during daylight hours, and we’ll give you a heads up at least an hour before arrival. When the car shows up, you do another walk-around inspection, compare everything to the condition report from Halifax, and once you’re satisfied, you sign the paperwork and you’re all set.
Your responsibility, but none of it is complicated.
Give it a wash first. Nothing fancy, just clean enough so the exterior inspection goes quickly and you can actually see the paint. Winter shipping means clearing off ice and snow before the carrier arrives.
Fuel should be at a quarter tank or less. Enough for loading and unloading, but not so much that it adds unnecessary weight to the trailer.
Clear out the interior completely, and that means everything. Console, glovebox, trunk, backseat. Personal belongings can't ride along during transport.
The alarm needs to be off before it ships. A randomly triggered alarm during a cross-country haul is a headache nobody needs. Let the driver know if there are special instructions for disabling it.
Grab your spare keys and hand a set to the carrier. Hang onto your fob or remote if they don't need it to operate the vehicle.
Anything that's not permanently attached to the exterior has to come off. Racks, tonneau covers, bug shields, spoilers, aftermarket accessories, all of it.
Fluids are worth checking too, since your car will cross multiple climate zones between Nova Scotia and BC. Coolant and antifreeze should be at proper levels.
Driving an EV? The battery should be at 80% minimum. And leave the charger in the vehicle for the carrier.
Over 20 years in the business now. Vehicles moved all across North America. We’re members of the Canadian Association of Movers and have shipped more than 500,000 vehicles across Canada, the United States, and internationally.
Anything with wheels, we can handle it.
When you pick up the phone, you get a real person. Your coordinator. Someone who actually knows where your car is and what’s happening with it, not a recording or a call center.
Schedules shift, and we roll with it. Last-minute pickup when available, door-to-door service, whatever the situation calls for.
Wondering where your vehicle is at midnight? Call your relocation coordinator.
Every carrier we use carries full insurance coverage. Your car is protected from the moment it leaves Nova Scotia to the moment it arrives in British Columbia.
